UC Students for Transparency
THE POWER IS WITHIN STUDENTS
UC Students for Transparency is a grassroots student organization across the University of California school system calling for accountability and transparency in our student government, administration, & campus leaders. We advocate for transparency for all stakeholders of the UC system. We provide a voice for those who are being ignored by the institution and system.
About UCST
Following the impact that was caused by the COVID pandemic, campus closures, and ever increasing disparities impacting our most vulnerable student communities, G4T took advantage of remote study to initiate an unprecedented social media campaign focused on informing students about issues that were extremely important, but not being addressed at UC Santa Barbara.
In August 2020, we became University of California Students for Transparency as we began our second branch at UC Riverside. Months later, we are now a group of over 70 student activists working virtually to keep students informed and create change.
Achievement Highlights
Consistent Success Across Social Media
Each of our social media campaigns have followed a strict branding and strategy policy, resulting in consistent growth across all our social media, averaging 1,000,000+ monthly impressions and landing our campaigns consistent local news spotlights. This has allowed us to reach a large audience in order to keep our target demographic informed and create necessary social change.
Public Impact and Local Legislation
Through our campaign to highlight the concerns the public has of COVID-19 we were able to make major local impact in IV. Our victories include campaigning for a strict health ordinance that fines large gatherings in IV during COVID-19, hosting the first virtual town hall meeting that led to the creation of a local testing center in IV, and aiding 4,000+ students in setting up their initial vaccine appointments through our social media links.
Campus Transparency
Our work in campus transparency has resulted in two major victories. After advocating for the first ever recall election in Associated Students history and acquiring the signatures of 1,300 students a UCSB A.S. President facing multiple sexual assault allegations was forced to resign. After our social media campaign that informed UCR students of a missing A.S. $5,000+ Black Lives Matter donation, the donation was eventually returned.
We believe that knowledge is power.
By educating students on issues occurring behind-the-scenes within the UC system, we aim to empower student voices for change.
Social Media Activism
UC Students for Transparency pride ourselves in using social media to create awareness and as a form of activism. In less than six months, we grew our first Instagram account from zero to nearly 5,000 followers, branched out to our second UC school, and created an additional campaign that gained nearly just as many followers. Our goal is to create awareness of an issue and transform the awareness to action by contacting & lobbying people who have the power to create the change within the UC system. We are a group of over 70 students from different backgrounds, experiences, and years divided into five different teams: Student Affairs, Creative Team, Social Media, Outreach, Diversity & Inclusion.

As students, we do have a lot of power, but it is important to contact important channels in an organized manner. If there is an issue that interests you, investigating, calling for action, or accountability, UC Students for Transparency is here to stand behind and with you.
