Leasing Companies & Profiting during COVID-19

Understanding Who's Fanning the Flames

Why do People Come to IV?

UC, Santa Barbara has had a long running reputation of being a party school. For some this is a reason to attend UCSB, for others it may be a reason to attend the local community college. However it also brings in people who have no intention of being a student.

Bringing Parters In

Some leasing companies based in Isla Vista are putting their profits before the lives of others. They seem to be actively seeking out people who aren't going to UCSB and will have nothing to do, with their only intention being to party it up during the pandemic. This coupled with the fact that they are still jamming people into 15 person homes is outright making them out to be one of the leading sources in this pandemic. Playa Life IV's comment on this is "We are private housing ... If we would like to rent to People from LA for summer we will and can."

Repeat Offences

Certain houses have had repeated partying, the images taken here were by multiple people. When asked for comment on how they plan enforce social distancing and prevent partying, PLIV blocked us. Other leasing companies are making a change. Leasing companies are currently profiting off of the spike in COVID-19 cases that they played a large part in creating. SB county recently forced UCSB to shut down all of their housing due to the summer spike in Isla Vista cases. UCSB's housing would have had saftey measures and social distancing in place. Now a large portion of students are seeking housing from these leasing companies.

The Worst Stories

Some of these people's stories are just a heartbreaking view into the reality of our community. Max, stated it wasn't too bad an experience, just a lot of hostility. Reddit user, canobeesus posted he was forced to move out of his home for the sake of his physical health because of their roommates. TruckerHatEnthusiast posted that they were able to come to an agreement with their roommate, with the help of some "coercion" from the property owners so that "he won't be acting irresponsibly ever again." Sadly I was not able to get a statement from the UCSB staff member since they're anonymous, but I think their post is important.
